The Associate Director will work within the Office of Entrepreneurship & Innovation Partnerships (EIP) to provide oversight and administrative management of innovation, incubator, and accelerator programs supporting startup companies, with a focus the clean energy and energy storage space, including programs under the New Energy New York (NENY) initiative. This role will focus on support and mentoring of startup companies, with the goal of accelerating technology commercialization, increasing economic engagement and development, and promoting synergies across the Upstate New York innovation and clean energy ecosystem. The Associate Director will design and deliver entrepreneurship and startup training programs, manage startup membership base, including metrics collection and various administrative tasks of the program, vet new member applicants, and manage client onboarding.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the development of the overarching incubator and innovation programming strategic plans, startup recruitment strategies, impact outputs, outcomes, and metrics, and reporting plans, coordinating with EIP leadership, program sponsor representatives, and external programmatic partners.

  • Mentor and train program client startups and their founders and employees. Connect companies with potential funding sources, prepare companies for investments, and assist companies with applications for grant and other non-dilutive funding.

  • Design and deliver startup accelerator and entrepreneurship training programming, including associated curricula, promotion plans, operational procedures, and management of resources.

  • Engage and partner with internal and external stakeholders to share information through regular communications, meetings, project management tools, and tracking and reporting to ensure impactful communication that aligns with program efforts.

  • Represent programs externally and build relationships with relevant internal and external partners and stakeholders, including with industry experts and investors, supporting the growth of the EIP and incubator network of entrepreneurs-in-residence, subject matter experts, referral partners, and funders.

  • Seek and establish partnerships with investors and other funding sources to support innovation programs and capital resources available to client startups.

  • Provide oversight of relevant program budget and financial planning, while ensuring compliance with financial policies and procedures for handling funds.

  • Support EIP leadership in developing the investment process for a startup investment fund from origination to deployment of capital.

  • Oversee program metrics collection and reporting.

    Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in STEM- or business-related fields, with 5+ years of startup incubation, technology commercialization, business development, or high-tech entrepreneurship experience.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • The ability to work collaboratively with a variety of constituents and organizations is required.

  • Experience in managing complex projects and priorities within a matrixed work environment.

  • Strong organizational, time management, and prioritization skills with great attention to detail.

  • Experience using Google Suite, Zoom, Calendly, Microsoft Office

  • High degree of comfort with client relationship management databases.

Preferred Skills, Knowledge & Experience:

  • MBA or advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in physical sciences or engineering.

  • Strong candidates will have 5+ years of experience working with startups or as a founder, impact investing, venture capital, or at an early-stage, high-growth organization.

  • Experience working with clean energy technologies, for example from work in the battery or energy storage industry.

  • Experience working with universities, for example through licensing of technologies, subcontracts, consulting, etc.

  • Strong network of strategic partners to provide resources such as training, venture capital, and business opportunities.

    Additional Information:

Salary: $110,000 - $120,000 Annually. Note: This is for a one year appointment renewable based on successful performance and availability of funding.
