The Supervisor of Pharmacy Technicians assists the pharmacist supervisor(s) and manager(s) in managing daily operations and activities of the pharmacy technicians in compliance with applicable State Board of Pharmacy regulations. The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor reviews and adjusts technician assignments and responsibilities as necessary, and with monthly scheduling. The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor is actively involved in the training and development process for pharmacy technicians and assists in the development of policies and procedures specific to the practice site and is responsible for facilitating the daily operations of the pharmacy. This position also serves as a role model in the practice of pharmacy for other technicians, demonstrating leadership and initiative, and fulfilling the needs of the department.

Essential Functions

Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the hospital’s policies and procedures, including its Service Standards and its Code of Conduct.

  • Reviews workflow and adjusts technician assignments and responsibilities as necessary.

  • Assists with monthly scheduling as required.

  • Assists with interviewing and hiring new technicians.

  • Reviews and approves employee timecards for accuracy, and completeness.

  • Evaluates and conducts employee performance reviews.

  • Provides follow up on any departmental issues to department leadership and works with other departments for issue resolution as needed.

  • Troubleshoots and serves as a resource for day-to-day operational questions and issues as they arise and seeks out support from department leaders when needed

  • Provides departmental support and leadership in fulfilling departmental staffing needs during short staffing situations, including arranging technician coverage for sick calls, or coverage for specific project/workflow implementation.

  • Coaches and mentors pharmacy technicians and interns, and supports technician development.

  • Assists in inventory control and monitoring/operationalizing drug shortage product changes.

  • Oversees checks of all monthly inpatient medication storage area inspections for outdated medications

  • Assists in maintaining a safe and clean environment by assessing and maintaining equipment, stock supplies, and general appearance of the department

  • Oversees completion of pharmacy required documentation and other regulatory requirements through the use of the online documentation system

  • Actively participates in hospital/department committees and educational activities as assigned

  • Collaborates in the review, revision, and preparation of policies and procedures for the Department of Pharmacy

  • Ensures compliance for Department of Pharmacy with all pharmacy related regulatory requirements

  • Provides timely and accurate communication both written and verbal as appropriate regarding operational changes and continuous quality improvement as they relate to assigned areas

  • Performs all duties of pharmacy technicians as required.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

    Education: Associated degree or equivalent work experience

    Experience: Five (5) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience

    License/Certification: CPhT - Certified Pharmacy Technician credential issued by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)

    -AND-

    Licensed as a Pharmacy Technician by the California Board of Pharmacy

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Ability to apply judgment and make informed decisions.

  • Ability to effectively give directions, analyze problems, and interpret analytical data.

  • Knowledge of local, state and federal regulatory requirements relevant to pharmacy practice.

  • Knowledge of sterile and non-sterile compounding procedures, standards and applications.

  • Knowledge of pharmacy technology systems, ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues.

  • Knowledge of the pharmacy distribution system including workflows for all pharmacy areas.

Pay Range

Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role.

Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

Typically, new team members join at the minimum to mid salary range.

Minimum to Midpoint Range (1.0 FTE): $75,649.60 to $100,297.60
