Description of Job
This is a full-time 12-month, administrative professional staff position. The Director of the ThunderWolf Recreation is responsible for the management and operation of the Student Recreation Center, and affiliated programs, and shall provide the vision and leadership to develop and manage a comprehensive recreation program.
The Director will manage and administer an auxiliary budget that is tied directly to student enrollment. The Student Recreation Center is a student-fee funded facility and is directed in collaboration with student government bylaws; the student advisory committee, and the VPSA of Student Affairs. Major budget expenses are tied to personnel, operations, and debt services.
The Director is responsible for providing leadership and the development of a comprehensive program for: strength, fitness and wellness, the Outdoor Pursuits program, informal recreation, aquatics, recreation scheduling, membership services, equipment rental, intramurals and club sports.
The Director is responsible for the overall supervision of the student recreation center. Responsibilities include: all operational procedures of the facility, determination and reporting of maintenance concerns, student employment and training, budget, scheduling equipment repair and replacement for the entire facility, planning programs and events, working with students and departments on campus to meet their needs when planning additional programs and events, and oversee three professional staff.
Primary Duties
Supervision
Supervise Associate Director and other staff under current organizational chart.
Interview, hire, train, evaluate and assign work to ThunderWolf Recreation staff in accordance with University policies & procedures.
Budget Development
Responsible for all fiscal aspects of the unit, including annual and long term budgeting, equipment replacement funding and the maximization of all revenue inclusive of student fee.
Prepare deferred maintenance report.
Program Administration
Oversee the Student Recreation Center and its affiliated programs to ensure compliance of appropriate industry standard policies and procedures mitigating risks.
Formulate and revise programs, policies and procedures that provide a variety of opportunities including informal programs (self-directed), intramural sports (structured), sports clubs (interest groups), instructional programs, special events, outdoor programs, fitness and wellness programs, extramural programs, family and youth programs and programs for people with disabilities.
Ensure effective communication and marketing strategies are implemented as it pertains to the Student Recreation Center and its affiliated programs, schedules, employment, and engagement opportunities.
Collaborate with academic departments to develop powerful cocurricular engagement opportunities and with external affairs to achieve a positive relation with the Pueblo community.
Facilities Management and Staff Support
Coordinate and assist the Assistant Director for Facilities with the scheduling and use of campus recreational facilities (including the Student Recreation Center, Pool, the Student Recreation Field, Climbing Wall, Challenge Course and the Disc Golf Course).
Maintain clear, direct and collaborative dialogue with appropriate units (i.e., facilities, auxiliary services).
Manage the unique maintenance needs of these recreational facilities in coordination with Facilities Management ensuring the highest level of cleanliness, safety, and operational quality.
Assessment
Lead program assessment and quality reviews by gathering data, preparing reports and evaluating data to determine effectiveness of overall recreation programs.
Set measurable goals, objectives and performance standards which align with the mission of the University and Student Affairs producing excellence in recreation and student development.
Communicate the goals and objectives of the Student Recreation Center and its affiliated programs to students, staff, faculty, alumni and community and enlists support from all groups to continually improve offerings and keep people engaged in campus recreation.
Recommend program modifications as identified by program summaries, student feedback, community (University and Pueblo) input, and performance data.
Ancillary Duties
Attend pillar and other campus meetings, events, trainings, and serve on committees related to the mission and goals of the division and the University.
Serve on internal and external committees, planning teams, building supervision, staff training events, and other essential events.
Salary Range
$65,000-$74,000
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Minimum Qualifications
Master's Degree in the field of business, education, recreation, exercise science, kinesiology, leadership, student affairs or related field.
Affiliation/Membership with NIRSA, NASPA or ACPA, AORE
Certification in First Aid/CPR & AED
5 years of direct responsibility for a formal student recreation program in a higher education University or College setting
3 years' experience supervising full-time professional staff
Experience managing complex budgets greater than $500,000 annually, with multiple funding sources
Demonstrated experience with student development theories and applications in the recreation industry.
Experience conducting program reviews and preparing related statistical and narrative reports
Experience in the development of a comprehensive wellness program.
Demonstrated business acumen and experience managing and providing service to multiple constituent user groups.
Demonstrated professional experience in a number of the following functional areas: Strength, Fitness and Wellness, The Outdoor Adventure Program, Informal Recreation, Aquatics, Recreation, Scheduling, Membership Services, Equipment Rental, lntramurals and Club Sports
Preferred Qualifications
Completed Defensive Driving course.
Certification in one of the following ACSM, ACE, NASM
Management experience with a variety of playing surfaces (wood courts, pools, grass and synthetic fields, asphalt, sand, etc.)
Experience in the development of marketing materials.
Experience with adaptive recreational programming and inclusion.
Experience in a position involving collaboration with academic departments in order to develop co-curricular programming.
Experience with Behavior Management System as they pertain to Higher Education
